Indoor Tanning Best Practices: Optimal Duration and Frequency

The best indoor tanning results come from patience. A gradual schedule looks more natural, fades more evenly, and gives your skin time to respond between sessions.

Start with your skin type

Your starting time depends on how your skin reacts to UV exposure. Very fair or sensitive skin needs the shortest sessions. Skin that tans more easily may tolerate slightly longer sessions, but it should still build colour slowly.

Suggested starting times

  • Very fair or burn-prone skin: speak with staff before tanning; a very short session may be recommended, or UV tanning may not be suitable.
  • Fair to medium skin: often starts around 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Olive or deeper skin tones: may start around 5 to 7 minutes, depending on tanning history.
  • Experienced tanners: increase only gradually and avoid overexposure.

These are general guidelines, not medical advice. If you have skin concerns, a history of skin cancer, photosensitive medication, or recent cosmetic treatment, check with a healthcare professional first.

How often should you tan?

Leave at least 48 hours between UV tanning sessions. Many clients maintain their colour with one or two sessions per week after building a base. More frequent tanning does not automatically create better results and can increase irritation or overexposure.

Safety basics every time

  • Wear proper protective eyewear for the full session.
  • Never tan on burned, peeling, or irritated skin.
  • Tell staff about medication or skincare that may increase UV sensitivity.
  • Stop if you feel burning, discomfort, or unusual heat.
  • Use sunscreen outdoors, even if you already have a tan.

Make your tan last longer

Moisturise daily, avoid aggressive scrubs right after tanning, and build your colour over several shorter sessions.
